Urolithiasis Treatment in Germany

kidney pain

Urolithiasis treatment in Germany – is a priority area for most German clinics that have relevant departments. The mechanisms of stone formation in the kidneys and ureters are still not fully understood, but doctors know the methods of solving the problem very well. German specialists use the latest equipment for diagnostics and conduct treatment strictly within the framework of evidence-based medicine.

Presumed Causes of Kidney Stone Formation

For many years, doctors considered improper nutrition as the cause of urolithiasis development – monotonous, mainly fast food, fatty and spicy dishes. But over time, several more provoking factors were identified:

  • physical inactivity;
  • consumption of a limited amount of fluid per day;
  • long-term use of certain medications – ascorbic acid, sulfonamides;
  • deficiency of vitamin B and C in the body;
  • congenital malformations of the urinary system organs;
  • inflammatory diseases of the kidneys, bladder and ureters of chronic form;
  • some diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Symptoms of Urolithiasis

A feature of urolithiasis – for a long time it is asymptomatic, often stones are discovered accidentally during medical examinations or diagnostic tests for a completely different reason.

The disease proceeds with alternating periods of exacerbation and remission. The patient periodically complains of lower back pain radiating to the thigh or buttocks. If the pathology is complicated by an infectious process, an increase in body temperature and an increase in pain intensity are possible. The infection leads to inflammatory processes in the kidney tissue, the condition worsens, and the complicated clinical picture sometimes becomes the cause of diagnostic errors. Another characteristic symptom of the pathology in question – hematuria: the presence of blood in the urine. The cause of this is injury to the kidney mucosa by the stone.

Diagnostic Procedures in German Clinics

urologist consultation

German doctors can make a diagnosis based on the patient's complaints and medical history, but it must be confirmed by instrumental and laboratory studies:

  • general blood and urine tests with leukocyte formula;
  • bacteriological urine examination;
  • ultrasound of abdominal organs and retroperitoneal space;
  • radioisotope renography;
  • cystoscopy;
  • retrograde pyelography;
  • X-ray examination of the kidneys;
  • renal angiography.

If there are doubts, specialists can be invited for consultation.

Urolithiasis Treatment in Germany

Treatment is prescribed only taking into account the diagnostic results. If the disease is detected at an early stage of development, the stones are small and found in small numbers, then drug therapy will be effective. With a large number of large stones, surgical intervention is performed.

Drug therapy – is the dissolution of stones using specific medications. A diet is necessarily selected, the patient is prescribed painkillers. The exit of stone remnants occurs through the urinary tract, that is, during urination. Positive results of conservative therapy in Germany are recorded in 98% of cases.

Surgical intervention involves performing lithotripsy – a manipulation during which shock wave force is used. Crushing large stones into smaller fractions is done remotely, that is, without a full operation. It is characterized by a low probability of complications and a short rehabilitation period.

Full operations are prescribed if urolithiasis is diagnosed at an advanced stage and the kidneys have lost 50% of their functionality. It is performed minimally invasively using an endoscope. The removed stones are sent for laboratory examination and based on its results, recommendations are given to the patient regarding further diet, which serves as prevention of relapses.
