How much does treatment in Germany cost? – depends on many factors. Based on the primary medical documentation provided by the patient, an individual treatment program in Germany is developed for them. Specialists of the specialized clinic compile a list of all necessary medical procedures and their costs in accordance with the current pricing rules for medical services in Germany.
Accurate treatment cost calculations and patient billing are carried out directly by the financial departments of specialized clinics in accordance with the current official price list. So, the patient will only know how much treatment in Germany costs after processing the submitted primary documentation and agreeing on the treatment course.
The treatment cost can be adjusted directly at the clinic after the initial examination of the patient. It should be noted that the cost can change both upward and downward. All changes are always made only by the clinics themselves and exclusively for medical reasons, with mandatory notification to the patient about the expected changes. A cost increase is possible if any hidden diseases requiring additional examination or treatment are discovered during the treatment process.
A decrease in treatment costs will occur when, after examination or during treatment, the need for previously prescribed procedures disappears or when the recovery process proceeds faster and the patient can be discharged earlier.
Price summary tables, approximate treatment costs in Germany.
Since 2003, Germany has been using the DRG (Diagnosis-Related-Groups) reference book – a unified pricing system for calculating the cost of inpatient treatment in Germany. The DRG pricing system applies in all German clinics that have received a license to provide medical care and is mandatory. According to § 17 KHG (German Hospital Law) – prices for medical services must be the same for all patients, including foreign patients. The DRG reference book contains all the necessary information: from the cost of the simplest medical services to innovative treatment methods and high-tech operations. The actual treatment cost consists of the base price according to DRG tables multiplied by a coefficient (the coefficient value is affected by the patient's age, diagnosis, comorbidities, first or repeat surgery, clinic status, etc.), plus doctors' fees (as a rule, foreign patients are treated by chief physicians or leading specialists).
Medical services in Germany are not subject to value added tax (VAT). The only exception is the services of plastic surgeons. Nevertheless, you have the right to get a VAT (MwSt) refund for goods purchased at pharmacies and medical equipment stores.
