Municipal Clinics of Munich

The Municipal Clinic of Munich, Germany is an association that includes 5 clinics under common management. It is a major healthcare project in Germany, providing diagnosis and treatment of all known diseases of any complexity. The Munich and Bavarian authorities have already invested about 1 billion euros in development, construction of new facilities, and equipping laboratories, operating rooms, and departments.

About the Clinic

Since 2018, the municipal clinic has been renamed to "Munich Clinic". It includes more than 65 departments and can accommodate 3,400 patients in hospitals at one time. In just one year, more than 130,000 patients receive qualified medical care in the departments of the Munich Municipal Clinic, regardless of their citizenship or country of origin.

Students from the city's universities complete their internships at the Munich Clinic, in all its divisions. The association's doctors work closely with research centers, so research work is carried out on the basis of the departments:

  • In Neuperlach, Professor, Doctor of Medicine Meinolf Karthaus is developing antifungal agents - antimycotics. Mold infections can affect various organs (sinuses, liver and lungs, eyes, brain), and there are no standard treatment regimens for them. This research is important for cancer patients, as new drugs increase the chances of survival after aggressive chemotherapy.
  • In the colorectal cancer center at Munich Hospital Bogenhausen, work is underway to develop the latest cancer treatment methods. They are investigating whether sports activity has a positive effect on patients with colorectal cancer during chemotherapy. The results will be important in terms of increasing the chances of returning to an active life even after multiple chemotherapy treatments.

All university clinics in Germany are involved in these projects, including Ludwig Maximilian University, which is given the opportunity to conduct clinical trials.
