Scoliosis Treatment in Germany

spinal curvature in a child

Scoliosis — is a pathology of the musculoskeletal system. This is a curvature of the spine, accompanied by its deviation from the axis in the frontal plane. In the early stages of the disease, only a slight deformation is observed, but gradually all parts of the spinal column become involved in the process. It twists, curves in the anterior-posterior direction, which directly affects a person's posture. It is almost impossible to return the back to its original position at home, but there are chances for recovery. Scoliosis treatment in Germany — is a comprehensive approach to the problem. At the patients' service are the latest techniques, modern equipment and a staff of specialists with the highest qualifications.

Causes of Pathology Development

Scoliosis — is a pathology that more often develops not in adults, but in children and adolescents. The spine is most susceptible to deformation during periods of intensive growth.

Doctors name two dangerous ages when parents need to be especially attentive:

  • 4-6 years;
  • 10-14 years.

Scoliosis should not be confused with ordinary posture curvature, which often occurs in childhood and adolescence. Violation of the correct position of the spine is successfully corrected by changing the posture when working at a desk, while scoliosis requires a comprehensive approach.

The exact cause of the disease is not always possible to establish. In 80% of cases, the pathology is idiopathic in nature. At the same time, scoliosis is diagnosed in girls 4-7 times more often than in boys.

In 20% of cases, deformation can be provoked by:

  • metabolic disorders;
  • congenital disorders of the musculoskeletal system;
  • disorders of the structure and functions of connective tissue — bone, cartilage;
  • different limb lengths;
  • past injuries;
  • imbalance due to limb amputation.

Scoliosis can be progressive — developing rapidly or non-progressive — proceeding smoothly without sudden changes. It can affect any part of the spine from cervical to sacral or be complex. Treatment tactics in German clinics are always selected taking into account these features.

Scoliosis Symptoms

degrees of spinal curvature

In the early stages, the pathology is difficult to detect, as it proceeds asymptomatically. There is no pronounced curvature. Beginning changes can be suspected by a slight asymmetry of the shoulder blades. At rest, one shoulder is usually higher than the other.

As the disease progresses, the symptoms change. It is customary to distinguish four degrees of scoliosis. The earlier therapy is started, the higher the chances of success, but doctors in Germany help patients even in advanced cases.

  1. First degree — deviation angle from the axis is less than 10 degrees. Characteristic clinical symptoms — slouching, head tilted forward, asymmetry of the shoulder line. X-ray images show a tendency to torsional changes — twisting of the vertebrae.
  2. Second degree — deviation angle in the range from 11 to 25 degrees. The curvature of the spinal column does not disappear when the body position changes. The shoulders, neck and waist are asymmetrical. A protrusion in the thoracic region is visualized. X-ray clearly shows the twisting of the vertebrae.
  3. Third degree — deviation angle from 26 to 50 degrees. All signs of second-degree scoliosis persist. The anterior costal arches protrude, a hump forms on the back. The muscles of the abdominal wall weaken.
  4. Fourth degree — maximum deviation angle (over 50 degrees). All existing signs of deformation intensify. A rib hump is visible. The muscles in the curvature zone stretch. Coordination of movements is impaired. Painful sensations are possible.

It is not always possible to predict the course of scoliosis, so it is better to seek medical help without wasting time. Qualified orthopedists and surgeons practice in German clinics who will do everything possible to restore the health of the musculoskeletal system at any age.

Diagnostic Procedures in German Clinics

curvature diagnostics

The first stage of scoliosis treatment in Germany — is collecting anamnesis and selecting the optimal program. Specialists study the images and test results provided by patients, familiarize themselves with existing medical conclusions, prescribe additional studies to clarify the degree of curvature.

Scoliosis diagnostics in Germany is carried out using instrumental methods that allow obtaining accurate results without long waiting. German clinics use:

  • radiography;
  • computed tomography;
  • magnetic resonance imaging.

In Germany, not only standard methods for diagnosing musculoskeletal system pathologies are used, but also highly specialized studies that allow assessing the condition of the patient's spine. One of them — is electrospondylography. This method detects scoliosis in the early stages, when X-ray examination is less informative. The doctor evaluates the electrical conductivity indicators of different parts of the spine. During the study, other pathologies can be detected, including hidden protrusions, hernias.

Another modern diagnostic method actively practiced in Germany — is computer optical topography. In this case, X-ray radiation is not used, so the procedure is safe even for a child. The method is based — on the body's ability to reflect light streams. Based on the diagnostic results, the doctor accurately determines the angle of the scoliotic arc, and also has the opportunity to assess the condition of the muscle fibers supporting the spine.

Treatment Methods

Scoliosis treatment in Germany is selected individually, taking into account the patient's age, stage of pathology, cause of curvature, presence or absence of concomitant diseases, compression of nerve endings.

In German clinics, preference is always given to conservative methods or innovative approaches that involve quick recovery and minimal risks of complications. Surgical treatment is resorted to in exceptional cases — if a council of doctors after comprehensive diagnostics considers all other schemes ineffective.

Spinal Surgery

Surgery, scoliosis correction X-ray

Surgical treatment of scoliosis in Germany is performed for the third and fourth degree of the disease, when conservative therapy does not lead to a positive result. German clinics practice minimally invasive operations with a minimum number of incisions and fast healing. During surgical intervention, rods and screws are inserted into the deformed sections of the spine, holding the connective tissues in the correct position. As a result, the angle of deviation from the axis decreases.

Such operations allow immobilizing a small fragment of the spine. They are safe, so they can be performed on both a child and an adult. For children, dynamic structures are used that do not interfere with natural bone growth, for adult patients — stable fixators.

All materials used to support the vertebrae are well tolerated by the body. If there are contraindications, autografts obtained from the patient's own connective tissue (ribs) can be used. Timely intervention of this kind allows stopping the deformation and avoiding full-fledged surgical treatment.

In Germany, surgical treatment of scoliosis using a new technique that originated in the USA is possible — Dynamische Skoliose Korrektur. Dynamic correction — is the ability to eliminate curvature without rigid fixation of the spine. All connections remain elastic.

During the operation, screws are fixed in the vertebral bodies at the curvature site on one side of the axis, which are connected by a synthetic braided structure. As a result, bone tissue growth on the side with screws slows down, while the opposite half continues to develop. The spine retains flexibility, and the effect will be noticeable just a few weeks after the intervention.

The system works as an internal corset that does not need changes as the patient grows. It does not restrict movement and allows leading a normal lifestyle, playing sports.

The operation is minimally invasive. It is performed on patients from 10 years of age. The risk of complications is minimal. The synthetic structure holding the vertebrae in the correct position can be damaged, but, as a rule, the rupture occurs only in one place. This does not affect the outcome of the intervention.

Conservative Methods

results after wearing a corset, no scoliosis

Scoliosis treatment — is not always complex spinal surgery. German clinics practice a comprehensive approach. The best results in the early stages of scoliosis can be achieved by combining different conservative treatment methods.

In Germany, the following are actively practiced:

  • therapeutic massage;
  • manual therapy;
  • exercises on special equipment;
  • physical therapy.

         Another conservative method of scoliosis treatment — is wearing a corset (orthosis). A special rigid structure holds the back in the correct position and prevents further curvature. This method is effective if the pathology is diagnosed in a child and is not associated with developmental defects — muscle tissue atony, CNS diseases.

The corset is made to individual measurements. It is made of hypoallergenic plastic, fastened with straps and provides expansion zones. It must be worn 22-23 hours a day. The orthosis is abandoned in adolescence after the completion of bone tissue formation.

A corset — is an effective device for correcting the position of the spine in children. Use in adult patients is inappropriate. The only exception — is the selection of an orthosis for elderly people to reduce back pain.

All these methods are designed to slow down the progression of the disease and return the spine to an anatomically correct position. They can be used after surgery to reduce the risks of complications, speed up rehabilitation and consolidate the results of surgical treatment.

Innovative Technologies

The pride of advanced German clinics — is the unique MIBRAR technology. This method involves treating spinal pathologies without surgery. It is used for scoliosis accompanied by concomitant bone tissue pathologies.

Spinal curvature itself — is a condition that does not threaten life. Surgical intervention requires a long recovery period, a special rehabilitation program. The solution for patients who do not want to take risks — is MIBRAR technology, which will eliminate problems associated with scoliosis — stenosis, joint pain, muscle tissue atony.

It is based on the body's ability to independently regenerate damaged tissues. Autogenous plasma® enriched with growth factors is used for treatment. This technology allows eliminating hernias, restoring intervertebral discs, the load on which increases with scoliosis.

Unlike PRP therapy (or plasmolifting), the patient is injected not just plasma enriched with platelets, but a regenerative autologous hemogenic fraction AHF® containing platelet growth factors, mesenchymal cells, and plasma. It is obtained by centrifuging the patient's venous blood at high speeds and when changing the number of revolutions. Then, using Cyber Navi Hand equipment and under the control of the C-arm X-ray surgical system, the concentrate is injected through a probe into the affected area of the spine.

Advantages of the MIBRAR Method:

  • elimination of spinal pain through natural regeneration;
  • spine restoration without surgery — no anesthesia required, no risk of bleeding;
  • treatment without hospitalization;
  • quick recovery after the procedure — the ability to lead a normal lifestyle immediately after the intervention;
  • maximum effectiveness.

Recovery After Treatment

Rehabilitation periods after scoliosis treatment are always different. The duration of recovery depends on the general condition of the patient's body, the degree of curvature, and the chosen therapy method. In German clinics, doctors do everything to ensure that patients return to normal life without restrictions as quickly as possible.

Medical centers offer several rehabilitation directions after spinal surgery. The main ones include:

  • massage;
  • acupuncture;
  • exercises on functional equipment;
  • physical therapy in the pool;
  • physiotherapy;
  • therapeutic baths.

The rehabilitation program after surgical intervention is selected individually. The goal of rehabilitation measures — is to speed up healing. During sessions, the muscles relax, metabolic processes improve, which is extremely important for maintaining mobility and getting rid of pain.

Advantages of Therapy in Germany

Treatment in German clinics — is:

  • individual approach to each patient;
  • highly informative methods for diagnosing musculoskeletal system diseases;
  • modern equipment of clinics;
