Professor Bernhard Hemmer is a leading specialist in neurological diseases, head of the Neurology Clinic Rechts der Isar (Klinikum rechts der Isar) at the Technical High School in Munich.
Prof. Hemmer graduated from the University of Freiburg with a degree in medicine. There he began his specialized training at the neurological university clinic. Having received a grant from the German Research Foundation, in 1995 he went on a scientific internship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA.
From 1998 to 2003 he worked as an assistant and then as a senior physician with a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation at the neurological clinic of the Philipps University Marburg.
From 2004 to 2007 he was deputy clinical director and professor of neurology at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Since May 2007 he has been Professor of Neurology and Director of the Neurological Clinic "Rechts der Isar".
In addition to his clinical specialization in the field of inflammatory and vascular diseases of the central nervous system, he is involved, in particular, in scientific research into the clinical presentations of multiple sclerosis, neuroborreliosis, neuro-HIV and genetic diseases of the nervous system. His focus is on the molecular and immunological causes of these diseases and new therapeutic approaches.
Working at the hospital in Freiburg and Marburg and as deputy director of the clinic in Düssendorf, the professor acquired an invaluable wealth of knowledge and practical skills.
Bernhard Hemmer's research activities in the clinic are aimed at identifying molecular and immunological causes and introducing innovative methods of treating them:
· Multiple sclerosis;
· Neuroborreliosis;
· Neurological consequences of HIV infection;
· Nervous diseases of genetic type.
The main vector of the professor’s work is B and T cells in multiple sclerosis and other diseases of the central nervous system.
